I am done printing out the Tub today. I needed to re-work the mast connection to the tub just a little bit. I decided I needed to keep it all on the same lid. I will need to print out another lid.
The tub is 540mm (21 1/4″) long and 180mm (7″) wide. It’s much larger than the last parts because of the larger printer. It’s also printed using PETG, so it should last outside in the heat.
The idea is for this tub to be the sandbox and to print a build another rover. Fully documenting the assembly of the rover with the second print. I would love to see more of these out there.
I also picked up a USB webcam. I was able to connect it to the Pi 3B+ and take a photo. Next is it get another and put two on the top of the rover mast. I might also have room for the Pi Camera as well. Just routing the wires is the challenge.
This week I will be printing the remaining parts to make a new rolling chasse. Programming the servos is the next task. I will need to get started right away as I need to calibrate each of the servos finding the start, middle, and end values for each servo. In my last test, I found that each servo is slightly different. Once the servos are calibrated, I can move them to the center and attach the mast and wheels.
I am also thinking of creating a mast for Solar / Heat test 12. I will have the test unit raise the mast, capture a few photos and close the mast on the hour. This is a good test of the battery life with a bit of a load. Right now, I am getting a full charge by 10:00 am on 2-3 batteries every day. I should have enough battery to power the Pi, Mast, and camera(s).
